Where candidates lose points
- Partner and shareholder basis: liabilities count for partners but not for S corporation shareholders, and the order of adjustments matters.
- Depreciation after the One Big Beautiful Bill Act: the $2,500,000 section 179 limit and 100% bonus for property acquired after 19 January 2025.
- Corporate rules: section 351, the dividends-received deduction tiers, E&P and redemptions.
- Payroll: deposit schedules, the trust fund recovery penalty and worker classification.
- Specialized returns: DNI and trust brackets, exempt organization filing thresholds and retirement plan limits.
