Form 1041 is a conduit return: the trust or estate is taxed on income it keeps, and beneficiaries are taxed on income distributed to them. DNI is the device that splits the two. The SEE tests the definitions, the exemption amounts and a few computations, and the compressed brackets explain most planning questions.
A revocable living trust is a grantor trust: the grantor reports everything as if the trust did not exist (IRC 671, 676).
| Entity | Exemption | Key feature |
|---|---|---|
| Decedent's estate | $600 | May choose a fiscal year; no estimated tax for 2 years after death |
| Simple trust | $300 | Must distribute all income; no charity; no corpus distributed |
| Complex trust | $100 | May accumulate income, pay charity or distribute corpus |
| Qualified disability trust | $5,100 for 2025 | Special exemption |
| Grantor trust | Not applicable | Income taxed to the grantor; optional reporting methods |
